Sounds

I will be posting every so often what I have been listening to, either as a full post or at the end of posts.

Christina Kubisch – Five Electrical Walks [Important Records] – I love it!

“Commercial Artist”

“Commercial Artist”, I believe that was what it said behind Hillman Curtis before he gave his talk at OFFF NYC late last year. I had thought of those two words sometime before I had seen them behind Mr. Curtis while he spoke, and what they meant to me “Commercial” and “Artist”. It was always the second part that I would always come back to. Well, it was inspiring to hear Mr. Curtis talk about the same thing in the same way and to hear him talk about how important the second part is in being a designer.

The statment also inspired me again a few ago when I had seen Paula Scher’s paintings at the Maya Stendhall Gallery. For sometime I had been on the fence about Ms. Scher’s work I respected it and liked it but, was not in love with it, something others around me felt. Seeing her recent show and listening to a few interviews I now appreciate her work more, seeing how she brings a vivid quality to a sometimes cold and rigid vessel known as graphic design.

The Atlantic?

For whatever reason I would never think of referring to The Atlantic while thinking of interviews with designers, but they have two interviews; one is a video with one of my favorite designers and critic, Michael Bierut , and the other is a print interview with Gary Hustwit , the director of one of my favorite films from 2007, Helvetica.

Side note: WordPress isn’t allowing me to embed the video in the current theme I have, and all my links are opening in the same window. I plan on updating the look of this blog in the next month and along with it taking care of some of these issues.

Looking back

Traditionally, year in review lists are some what hard for me to put together; this year was even harder with some personal and family issues arising, me being out of the loop, and me not keeping a list the whole year. With that being said my list for 2007…

The highlight of the whole year is me getting engaged to my girlfriend Nadene who without I would not be the person I am today.
